Dunkirk

This is my third time seeing Dunkirk and I can confidently say now, this one is definitely my least favorite movie of his.  I used to feel that spot belonged to Insomnia or Following but after seeing those again and now this one, I can say that Dunkirk is his film that belongs in that spot.  Granted the worst Christopher Nolan film is still better than a lot of other films out there but what I say separates this from most of his films and most others I'd compare this to is rewatchability.  I feel that Dunkirk has more rewatchability than most movies still but not as much as his other films as there doesn't seem to be much that is thought provoking provided in the story.  Even in Batman Begins and The Dark Knight Rises, there is more I got from aspects of the story and lines, especially some I didn't catch the depth of on previous viewings, that makes me think about those films long after the credits roll.  Dunkirk never had that.

I would say this aspect mostly just involves writing but every other aspect of filmmaking in this movie is stellar.  In regards to my previous takes on the cinematography in Chris Nolan films, unlike most of his films I've talked about so far, Dunkirk actually has more impactful cinematography with the shots chosen.  I feel Dunkirk is a good continuation from where Chris Nolan started with Interstellar where his cinematography skills become closer to that of a Kubrickian nature in that you can watch his movies to enjoy just viewing the images like going into a museum.  My favorite of these being the scene of Fortis 1 gliding onto the beach with the moments leading up to his capture.  Of course with speaking of this I can't help but point out how much I enjoy the choice of having Tom Hardy be in this role, like a play on him playing Bane with the criticism of him being behind a mask that muffled his voice the whole time so he's given another character that has the same thing going on but in a very different context.

Along with Hardy in that role, I thought the casting was great as always with their performances.  Cillian Murphy transformed more than anything and it's crazy to see him play the depth of his character who isn't even given a name but has so much going on with the progression you see him go through in the story.  But like I said everything was well done, only the writing wasn't quite up to the same level of staying with me as I come to expect from Nolan's work.  Of course I am excited to move on to Tenet next as that is another one that I would say contended for being at the bottom spot for Nolan films for me but I'm confident I'll still like seeing Tenet again on rewatch for a third time when we watch it later this month as I know the intricacies of its world had me asking questions from the second credits rolled.  But Dunkirk will always be one I'd recommend everyone watch once to appreciate it's artistry and maybe it would be a good film for people to start with when it comes to checking out Chris Nolan films because from there you can only go up.
