The Conjuring: Last Rites

Is this the end of The Conjuring series or universe? That’s what the marketing seems to bank on. I enjoyed this one but for a very different reason that I probably should be or was intended to at least. To me this felt like more like The Nun 3. I love the Conjuring movies for bringing interesting and creative scares to film but I also love the Nun spinoff movies as just being unashamedly over the top and cheesy, making the catholic church into being more like the syndicate from the John Wick movies and the effects just being so try hard. And the newest conjuring movie has more of that nun vibe in it.

What made the first Conjuring movie so good to me is how it built up to its horror with a threatening atmosphere and still upon rewatch it scares me more in the build up than it does when the demon starts showing herself. Each of the following movies the demon they’re facing shows itself sooner and sooner and this one its nearly at the start.

The pacing for me was generally decent throughout the film but just wasn’t scary but was hilarious at points. I had an epiphany while watching this and wonder if it’s just me or does it seem like when it comes to the horror genre in movies and video games, the more sequels an IP has, the it’s genre shifts whereas for movies it becomes more comedic and for video games it becomes more action packed?

I’d recommend this film to fans who like laughs from campy horror stories and fans of the universe. But if you want something with a dreadful atmosphere or horror that makes you think about and even keep you up at night, you’re not gonna get that here. But it is fun though. Only other thing I’ll say is I felt the way the ending to their doing these investigations went, it felt underwhelming like I feel like they dealt with bigger things in the last two Conjuring movies that would make one want to retire more but they gotta market this film.
